What are cookies

Generally speaking, a cookie is a small piece of data that may contain a unique, anonymous ID code sent from a visited website to the web browser programme on the user’s terminal (computer, notebook, tablet, smartphone) and can be sent back to the visited website the next time the user visits that same website. If the cookie is a so-called “session-cookie”, it expires and is deleted when the user exits the website in question. If instead the cookie is a so-called “permanent cookie”, in other words if it’s validity/duration exceeds that of the browsing session, it will be read and recognised by the site that sent it whenever the user pays a return visit to the website in question. While the user is browsing a website, his or her terminal may also receive cookies sent by other websites or web servers (so-called “third party cookies”), which may carry various different items (such as, for example images, maps, audio clips or specific links to other domains) contained on the website that the user is browsing.

Cookies may be used for a variety of different purposes, such as monitoring browsing sessions, memorising information about specific configurations relative to users who access the server, electronic authentication, etc.

Cookies can be classified in various ways. One possible way is to categorise them into one of two macro-categories, namely "technical" cookies or "profiling" cookies.

1. Technical cookies

Technical cookies are used solely for the purpose of "transmitting information on an electronic information network, or inasmuch as is strictly necessary in order to provide a service from a service provider to a subscriber or user who has requested said service " (see Art. 122, Clause 1 of the Privacy Code).

These cookies are not utilised for any other purposes and are usually installed by the titleholder or administrator of the website. They can be further subdivided into the following sub-categories:

a)      browsing or session cookies: these ensure normal browsing and utilisation of the website (for example, enabling the user to make a purchase or to identify himself in order to gain access to reserved areas);

b)      analytics cookies, which are similar to technical cookies only in that they are used by the website administrator to gather general information on the number of users that visit the website and their browsing behaviour;

c)       function cookies, which enable the user to browse a website according to a range of selected criteria (for example, preferred language, products selected for purchase, etc) in order to improve the service for the user himself.

2. Profiling cookies

Profiling cookies are aimed at creating specific user profiles and are used for the purposes of sending advertising messages that are in line with the user’s preferences as indicated by his/her online browsing behaviour. Italian and European legislation requires that users must be adequately informed regarding the use of such cookies and must explicitly grant their consent.

The computer’s browser can be configured to accept all cookies, to reject cookies or to advise the user whenever any cookie is received.

Cookies stored on your computer can also be deleted at any time.
Information on the most commonly used browsers and how to configure them with regard to cookies can be found on the following websites:
